Midweek worship with under 5s and carers
There are two distinct reasons for introducing mid week, very informal services for under 5s and their carers. The first is for the sake of the child – he can participate in a short time of worship that is designed especially to be appropriate for his level of understanding and he can also explore the church building so that it begins to feel a familiar and secure place to be. The second is for the sake of the carer – especially if she is not a regular church member. She too can experience the church building in a relaxed way, not feeling under pressure to control a toddler in a strange environment or alienated by an unknown pattern of worship.
Add the activity on to a regular toddler and carer group or playgroup – giving carers the option of staying for a short worship time after the end of a regular session – or organise it as a separate event that could additionally have refreshments and a short time of play for the children and chat for the adults before or after the worship.
You may choose to hold the worship in your main service venue to help foster that sense of familiarity, or you may feel that a smaller hall or room would be more comfortable – but remember the space you will need to accommodate buggies. Whichever you choose, make sure the venue is appropriate for young children and, if you are providing hot drinks as refreshments, how will you ensure the safety of the children?
