The Minister contacted Grace for the Next Generation because, although his pastoral work was attracting baptisms, there was no provision for children in the church. The Grace worker set up a toddler group for them and a monthly junior church called JAM Club for the grandchildren of church members. The JAM Club was an instant success, reaching mothers who had attended the church themselves as children. After a rocky start due to illness and other unforeseen problems, the toddler group is also flourishing and has introduced ‘specials’. Sometimes a visitor comes to pamper and sell beauty products; a photographer has been; and Bookstart gave away free books.
Both local schools have welcomed the Minister and the Grace worker. A lunch club was quickly established at one and the other requested lessons in puppetry and Bible overview. School children were keen to come to the first half-term entertainment – a magic show by a Christian clown. This was the first bridge from school to the church premises. The first Christmas saw a nativity play at the church for the first time in over 20 years – the congregation were tearful and overjoyed!
The first after school club consisted of two budding musicians – one could play 3 guitar chords and the other knew 7 notes on the recorder! This keen little band received loving encouragement as they performed in church monthly. Both have moved onto proper music lessons and are still keen to show their skills whilst their mothers continue to receive pastoral support.
There have been three well supported holiday clubs. These have had a strong Christian message and lots of help from church members. The current after school club draws from children attending these holiday clubs.
